What is meant by audibility in rooms?
The term audibility describes whether a room is suitable for certain types of sound such as speech or music. In the example above, the noise level should be optimised with room acoustic measures - in such a way that the guests in the restaurant can relax and talk to each other. Depending on the length of stay and the requirement for room comfort, other room acoustics requirements may apply.
What is new in DIN 18041?
The title of the revised 2016 DIN standard is “Acoustic quality in rooms – Specifications and instructions for room acoustic design”. The revised version includes current changes in construction technology as well as socio-political issues surrounding barrier-free building and inclusion in the area of hearing. Also newly added, is the extensive classification of the individual types of use into the five sub-categories of room category B.
Which rooms are in room category B?
The room category B describes audibility over short distances. These include five room sub-categories, which differ according to the length of stay and the demand for room comfort: rooms without quality of stay (e.g. stairwells), rooms for short-term stay (e.g. reception areas), rooms for longer-term stay (e.g. restaurants), workspaces (e.g. single or multi-person offices) and rooms with special requirements for noise reduction and room comfort (e.g. care facilities).
How can room acoustics be improved?
In room category B, audibility can be optimised through adequate damping of the room. To describe a rooms acoustic conditions, the so-called A / V ratio is used as an orientation value, i.e. a minimum amount of absorbing surfaces in relation to the volume V - technically known as the equivalent sound absorption area A. Compared to rooms for short periods of stay, special requirements for room comfort require larger surfaces to be covered with acoustically effective materials.
How can the A/V ratio be easily determined?
For acoustic planning, use simple dimension tables or determine the A / V ratio using a formula. In our example with the restaurant, the calculation of the A / V ratio was carried out using the planning aid from Knauf AMF. This also assists you in determining the minimum sound absorption coefficient and thus in the selection of suitable products for balanced room acoustics.
