Knauf AMF takes care of acoustics at leading hospital in Dubai Hills

King’s College Hospital has expanded its footprint in the UAE with a new General Hospital located in the heart of the Dubai Hills. Complementing King’s College Hospital’s existing three facilities based in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the new Hospital will act as the central direct link to world-class King’s College teaching hospital based in London, UK.

Playing host to facilities that will lead the way in medical innovation, the $200m, state-of-the-art hospital enlisted trusted suppliers in the design and build, who would bring to life the hospital’s vision of providing the highest level of patient care. Amongst those reputable companies were Knauf AMF, who provided a suite of high-performance systems to meet the facility’s acoustic and clinical demands and ceiling design challenges.

In sensitive healthcare environments, specifiers have a duty of care to ensure hygiene standards are met. Whilst different clinical facilities vary in their requirements, ceilings will always demand exceptional hygiene and acoustic properties. Due to technologically-advanced treatments, Knauf AMF systems are now able to prevent the growth and spread of harmful germs and bacteria in addition to offering comfortable room acoustics, which help to increase the feeling of wellbeing and aid the healing process.

King’s College Hospital Chief Construction Officer, Kevin Duffy comments: “In demanding hospital environments, it’s important to partner with manufacturers we know will meet the discerning needs of our clients. Knauf AMF products always perform outstandingly and, in this particular case, their systems have made such a positive contribution to the overall design and acoustic performance of this world-class medical facility.”

Thanks to the special composition of the AMF THERMATEX® range, Knauf AMF were able to tick all the boxes necessary to meet the hospital’s stringent requirements.

Located within the treatment and operating suites, over 1,886m2 of THERMATEX® Acoustic ceiling tiles were specified to provide high sound absorption levels, as well as contribute to the hospital’s sleek and elegant interior finish. Elsewhere in critical care units and various other specialist locations, around 764m2 of THERMATEX® Aquatec was installed, thanks to its excellent sound absorption and ability to cope with areas of high humidity.

Meanwhile, for the kitchen, office, storage and equipment areas, THERMATEX® Thermofon ceiling tiles were installed due to its high acoustic performance and specially-formulated Hygena treatment developed to prevent the spread of germs, bacteria and fungi on the tile surface.

Throughout the corridors and circulation areas, it was essential from a design standpoint that the acoustic systems sat flush with the rest of the ceiling. With these aesthetic requirements, a semi-concealed demountable ceiling system using THERMATEX® dB Acoustic panels was specified. The hospital demanded a demountable system in order to access the ceiling void and carry out essential maintenance checks.

Knauf AMF have a proven track record when it comes to creating clever acoustic and design solutions for healthcare interiors.
